The Fleet clinched their first victory double of the season after a last gasp John Akinde goal gave the Fleet a deserved 1-0 victory over strugglers Stafford Rangers at Marston Lane.
In a match played in the worst of conditions consisting of cold temperatures, rain and what seemed like gale force winds it was never going to be a high scoring game, despite the early indications. Both teams were quick out of the blocks - a positive sign for the Fleet considering they had only arrived 30 minutes before kick off because of heavy traffic on the M6 - with both sides testing their opposition keepers before the 10 minute mark. Lance Cronin continued his brilliant Boxing Day form with a good save with his feet early on.
The Fleet continued the pressure and forced a number of corners, but the accurate former Accrington keeper Danny Alcock managed to pluck any lose balls out of the air that came anywhere close to him, snuffing any possible threats Ebbsfleet were posing from the corners.
The rest of the first half left a lot to be desired, and with the Fleet pressure prominent but without a break through - much like that of Grays’ on boxing day - the bigger than average away following (due to a MyFootballClub meet up) was beginning to wonder if the goal would come.
The second half put ‘Boro more in the spotlight, and even though Ebbsfleet saw enough of the ball, Stafford started to look dangerous on the counter-attack. The pace of 43 year old veteran Neil Grayson and David McNiven left the Fleet defence exposed, although with Cronin alert as ever any long balls that were hoofed up and over - as we know Stafford like to play - were overall well dealt with.
The same pattern progressed to form a tense final stage of the match, and the hard work for the Fleet to break down the strong Stafford defence eventually paid off one minute into the two allocated for stoppage time. A long through ball down the right hand side sent Luke Moore into the corner with support coming forward. With the home players also back tracking, the ball was flown into the box towards Stacy Long, but after losing his footing and barely making contact, John Akinde latched onto the lose ball on the 6 yard box to turn and pass the ball calmly into Alcock’s bottom right corner for Akinde’s fourth goal in four games in all competitions to snatch victory for the Fleet.
